Russia issues the Declaration of Sovereignty but never officially declares its independence from the Soviet Union. With the declaration, it declares that the laws and constitution of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic (RSFSR) to be above those of the Soviet Union. The loss of the RSFSR which was the most powerful of all the Soviet republics is a major blow to the Soviet Union.βΆ
